Smash Bros. Dating App Receives Cease-and-Desist Order

Author:Kristen Update:May 18,2025

Smash Together, an innovative dating app designed for Super Smash Bros. enthusiasts, was set to launch its open beta on May 15. However, just before the anticipated release, the app's developers announced via a tweet that they had received a cease-and-desist letter. The tweet, shared on May 14, featured a melancholic Yoshi meme and the message, "We got cease and desisted," indicating the abrupt halt to their plans.

While the developers did not disclose the sender of the cease-and-desist, speculation points toward Nintendo, given the app's focus on their popular game, Super Smash Bros. Smash Together positioned itself as a "premium dating site for Super Smash Bros. enjoyers of all kinds," aiming to help users find their "dream Doubles partner" both in and out of the game. The app's unique matchmaking algorithm was designed to connect users with their ideal "Smash Partner."

Screenshots shared by the app showcased features tailored specifically for Smash Bros. fans. Users could list their preferred character, or "main," and share notable wins. The app also included prompts with a Smash Bros. twist, such as "I'm looking for... Someone who can make it out of pools at a major," adding a fun and competitive element to the dating experience.

The cease-and-desist letter likely stemmed from concerns over intellectual property and copyright infringement. Additionally, the concept of a dating app centered around a video game like Smash Bros. may have been a significant factor in the decision to issue the notice.

As of now, there has been no further communication from the Smash Together team regarding potential alternative solutions that do not involve the use of Smash Bros. elements. Fans and followers of the app will need to stay tuned for any updates on this front.
