Skyblivion, a Fan Remake of Oblivion in Skyrim's Engine, Is Still Targeting This Year

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 16,2025

Skyblivion, the ambitious fan-made remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion built within the Skyrim engine, is aiming for a 2025 release. A recent developer update stream reaffirmed this target, showcasing impressive progress. Developed by a dedicated team of volunteers, Skyblivion represents a truly monumental undertaking, years in the making. The team expressed optimism, hoping to complete the project, potentially even exceeding their own expectations.

Calling it a simple one-to-one remake significantly undersells the scope of this project. The developers are not only recreating Oblivion but also enhancing it, addressing various aspects of the original game. This includes ensuring unique items remain truly unique and bolstering the impact of existing bosses, with Mannimarco specifically mentioned. The livestream showcased the "A Brush with Death" quest, highlighting the stunning visual fidelity achieved.

Adding another layer of intrigue is the persistent rumor of an official Oblivion remake. Details of a potential official remake surfaced earlier this year, suggesting combat overhauls and other significant changes. While Microsoft declined comment, the existence of an Oblivion remaster was hinted at in documents revealed during the Activision Blizzard/FTC trial. The fate of several projects mentioned in these documents remains uncertain.

Should Microsoft and Bethesda proceed with their own Oblivion relaunch, Skyblivion's future could become complicated. Bethesda games have a rich history of community modding, extending from older titles to the recently released Starfield. Hopefully, Skyblivion avoids the fate of Fallout London, which encountered difficulties shortly before its intended release.
