Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nears Release, Writer Hints

Author:Kristen Update:May 16,2025

Are you eagerly awaiting Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars movie? Fear not, fans! The director behind Deadpool & Wolverine is indeed still at the helm of this mysterious project, and we’ve got a fresh update straight from the pen of writer Jonathan Tropper. "I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant, hinting at the film's progress. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

At this stage, details about the film remain scarce, but we do know it will take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has shed some light on its timeline, stating in a Deadline interview, “That’s also in the future... It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out.” This positions Levy’s film as the first to explore the post-Rise of Skywalker era.

Kennedy also confirmed that this new Star Wars film will hit theaters after 2026’s The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Adding to the excitement, reports suggest that Ryan Gosling is set to star in this much-anticipated project.

Jonathan Tropper’s optimistic words suggest that Levy’s film is on track, despite the wait. Fans can expect it no earlier than the last quarter of 2026, possibly even 2027. Since Disney’s last Star Wars film was the controversial Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, and several projects have been cancelled since, including films from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and the Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, this new venture is highly anticipated.

The Obaid-Chinoy project has undergone several transformations, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently stepping away after succeeding Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Nonetheless, Rey remains a focal point for Disney’s future plans, with reports indicating she will feature in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.

And there's more on the horizon: X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to pen a new trilogy, distinct from the Skywalker Saga, contrary to earlier rumors.

The next Star Wars offering to grace your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with an exciting triple-episode launch.
