Ryan Reynolds Explains Deadpool's Exclusion from Avengers, X-Men

Author:Kristen Update:May 16,2025

Ryan Reynolds has cast some doubt on the prospects of Deadpool joining the Avengers or the X-Men, suggesting that such a move would signify the end of the character's journey. "If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we're at the end," Reynolds stated in an interview with Time. "That's wish fulfillment, and you can't give him that." This comes despite the character's expressed desire to join the Avengers in the recent hit film, Deadpool & Wolverine.

Speculation was rife that Marvel Studios might be eager to integrate Deadpool into next year's Avengers: Doomsday, especially given the film's success and the character's popularity. However, Reynolds' name was notably absent from the extensive cast list revealed last month for Avengers: Doomsday, which included several veteran X-Men actors such as Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden. This has led to speculation about whether Avengers: Doomsday might actually be an Avengers vs. X-Men movie.

While Reynolds ruled out a formal promotion to either team, he hinted at the possibility of Deadpool making a surprise appearance in a supporting role. He cited the positive reception to Wesley Snipes' cameo as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine as a potential model. Meanwhile, Reynolds is already working on a new project, teasing it as an "ensemble" but keeping the details under wraps. This could mean another Deadpool film rich with cameos, potentially including characters like Snipes' Blade and Channing Tatum's Gambit, who appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine, as well as Jennifer Garner's Elektra and Dafne Keen's Laura Kinney/X-23.

As for Avengers: Doomsday, while the cast list has been a major reveal, specifics about the plot remain elusive. Anthony Mackie, who will reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America, expressed optimism, stating that the film will "give the audience that old Marvel feeling that they always had." This sentiment was echoed by other cast members like Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and Joseph Quinn (Human Torch). Additionally, a set photo leak sparked further speculation among fans, some of whom fear it may spell trouble for the X-Men.

There's also buzz about Oscar Isaac potentially appearing as Moon Knight in Avengers: Doomsday, fueled by his unexpected withdrawal from this month's Star Wars Celebration event due to scheduling conflicts. Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios' producer, has confirmed that the Avengers livestream did not include the entire cast of Doomsday, hinting at more surprises to come: "We revealed many, not all," he said during a video call at CinemaCon.
