Journalist Ben Hanson reports that players will unravel the mysteries of a lost civilization and delve into a new religion central to the narrative. While the extent of its open-world design remains unclear, the shift away from linearity is undeniable.

For the first time, players will journey alone, without companions or allies, in The Heretic Prophet. Neil Druckmann highlights the intention to evoke a profound sense of solitude within this uncharted universe, while exploring complex themes of faith and religion. The story unfolds on Sempiria, a planet isolated from the galaxy for over 600 years, where bounty hunter Jordan Moon arrives to fulfill a contract.

Druckmann also cites influences from Half-Life 2 and Monkey Island, hinting at a potential move away from traditional hand-holding, towards a more enigmatic narrative where players actively piece together the story's fragments.
