Rumor: Beloved Nintendo 64 Exclusive Coming to Modern Consoles

ESRB Ratings Hint at Imminent Doom 64 Release for PS5 and Xbox Series X

A newly updated ESRB rating suggests a current-gen console port of Doom 64 is on the horizon for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. While neither Bethesda nor id Software have made an official announcement, the ESRB's updated listing strongly indicates an impending release. This isn't unprecedented; the ESRB has previously leaked game releases before official announcements.

The 1997 Nintendo 64 classic, Doom 64, received a remastered release for PS4 and Xbox One in 2020, featuring enhanced visuals and a new level. This updated version also launched on Steam. The new ESRB rating omits a PC version, but given the 2020 port's success on Steam and the existence of Doom 64 mods for classic Doom titles, a PC release remains a possibility.

Historically, ESRB ratings have appeared just months before a game's launch, suggesting a relatively short wait for fans eager to experience the N64 shooter on modern hardware. Bethesda's past practice of quietly releasing older Doom ports adds further credence to a surprise launch.

Looking beyond Doom 64, rumors point towards a January 2025 reveal for Doom: The Dark Ages, with a full release expected later that year. Releasing updated versions of classic Doom titles could serve as effective pre-release hype for the next main installment in the series.
