Respawn Has Quietly Canceled a Multiplayer FPS Incubation Project

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 17,2025

Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind Apex Legends, has canceled an unannounced incubation project, resulting in layoffs. This was first reported by Insider Gaming, citing a LinkedIn post from a former production coordinator.

IGN independently confirmed the cancellation. The project, described as a multiplayer FPS, stemmed from a team previously working on a canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. While the exact number of layoffs remains unconfirmed, sources describe it as “small.” At least one individual connected to the project has clarified their departure was voluntary.

This cancellation follows a pattern of project cancellations and layoffs at EA, beginning in 2023 with job cuts at BioWare and Codemasters. A larger round of layoffs in 2022 impacted 670 employees across EA, including the closure of several projects, and resulted in approximately two dozen job losses at Respawn. Further restructuring at BioWare has also led to additional layoffs.

Electronic Arts has been contacted for comment.
