Author:Kristen Update:May 27,2025

Rumors are swirling that a Nintendo Switch 2 port of Red Dead Redemption 2 might be hitting the shelves by the end of 2025. Alongside this exciting news, there's talk of a next-gen upgrade for the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. According to GameReactor, insiders "close to Rockstar" have hinted that a version of Rockstar's iconic Wild West adventure is in the works for the Switch 2, complemented by a "next-gen upgrade patch" to enhance the gaming experience on current-gen systems like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.

While the details remain somewhat elusive, GameReactor's sources suggest that both the port and the upgrade could be available as early as later this year. This buzz is echoed by Nintenduo, which reports that the Switch 2 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 is expected to launch within Take-Two's current fiscal year, ending March 31, 2026. It's still up in the air whether the game will be a digital-only release or if physical copies will also be available.

Back in 2018, we at IGN hailed Red Dead Redemption 2 as a "masterpiece," awarding it a perfect 10/10 score. Our review praised it as a "meticulously polished open-world ode to the outlaw era." Given this acclaim, the prospect of Red Dead Redemption 2 making its way to the Switch 2 isn't entirely unexpected. In a recent Q&A session with investors following Take-Two's financial results, CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed "great optimism" for Nintendo's new platform, hinting at a more robust third-party support than in the past.

Zelnick revealed that Take-Two plans to launch four titles on the Nintendo Switch 2, marking a significant increase in their engagement with Nintendo's new console. He noted, "Historically, being a third-party in the Nintendo business has been a bit challenging. I think Nintendo has been very forthcoming in addressing that. And we're stepping up too, because we have great optimism for the platform. In terms of what we would bring to any platform, we address it on a case-by-case basis, we obviously want to be where the consumers are. But we would not necessarily bring every title to every platform. There are also great catalog opportunities as well."

These titles are not surprising additions, as Take-Two has already been actively publishing these franchises on the Nintendo Switch. However, Zelnick's comments suggest that the door is open for future releases, particularly from Take-Two's extensive back catalog. While GTA 6 might not be on the cards, classics like GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 could potentially make their way to the Switch 2.
