The Pokémon Company is responding to significant shortages of its latest Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) expansion, Scarlet & Violet—Prismatic Evolutions, as reported by multiple sources including IGN on January 16, 2025. The unexpected high demand has led to limited availability at launch.

A Pokémon Company spokesperson acknowledged the issue, stating they are working at maximum capacity to increase production and address the supply shortfall as quickly as possible. While fans may experience delays in acquiring the set, the company assures increased stock is underway.

Impact on Retailers:

The shortage particularly impacted smaller, local US stores. PokeBeach, a Pokémon TCG fan website, reported on January 4, 2025, that the unexpected demand overwhelmed distributors. Player 1 Services, a major Maryland retailer, noted that many stores, not typically carrying Pokémon products, placed orders, leading distributors to limit supplies to 10-15% for smaller retailers. Larger chains like GameStop and Target received a larger share of the allocation.

This scarcity has already driven up prices on the secondary market, with the Elite Trainer Box, for example, selling for significantly more than its retail price. However, it's anticipated that increased supply will eventually correct this price inflation.

Expansion Details and Future Releases:

Announced on November 1, 2024, and launched January 17, 2025, Scarlet & Violet—Prismatic Evolutions features Tera Pokémon ex, new illustration rare cards, and ultra rare Supporter cards. The set also includes reprints of popular cards with updated artwork, such as Teal Mask Ogerpon ex and Roaring Moon ex.

Additional products, including a Surprise Box, Mini Tin, Booster Bundle, and Pouch Special Collection, will be released throughout 2025, starting February 7th. The digital version of the set launched in Pokémon TCG Live on January 16, 2025, for iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows.
