Magic: The Gathering Edge of Eternities Preorder Guide

Author:Kristen Update:Dec 21,2025

Wizards of the Coast has established such a steady release schedule for its long-running trading card game, Magic: The Gathering, that a new set is always just around the corner.

While, at the time of writing, the upcoming Final Fantasy set is highly anticipated, fans seeking a 'Universes Within' experience after the excellent Tarkir Dragonstorm won't have to wait long—though Edge of Eternities could hardly be more different in tone.

The upcoming set, launching August 1, hasn't had any card previews yet, but that doesn't mean we're completely in the dark.

Here’s what we currently know about Magic: The Gathering: Edge of Eternities.

What is MTG Edge of Eternities?

This year, Wizards of the Coast is heavily focusing on Universes Beyond sets, with Final Fantasy being the first of three 2025 releases that draw from established franchises outside the company's own universe, followed later by Spider-Man and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Whatever your opinion on that direction, Edge of Eternities serves as a counterpoint, offering an original, cosmically-focused set that remains within Magic's own multiverse (even as it's positioned between the Final Fantasy and Spider-Man sets).

We've only seen initial concept art so far, but we do know this new set will kick off the final story arc of the Metronome storyline, which began with Wilds of Eldraine (for those still following the narrative).

Play Boosters

Play Boosters are now the standard pack type, having replaced both Set Boosters and Draft Boosters.

These 15-card packs are designed for sealed and draft play (though the final card is typically a token, advertisement, or art card). Cards 1 through 6 are common, and card 7 is a common, which can sometimes be a reprint.

Cards 8, 9, and 10 are uncommon, while card 11 contains your rare or mythic rare. Card 12 is a land card, which may be foil or feature full-art treatment, and card 13 is a "wildcard" slot that can contain any card from the set.

Card 14 is a guaranteed foil wildcard, increasing the chances of pulling sought-after cards from these packs. You can purchase Play Boosters individually or in a booster box.

Collector Boosters

Collector Boosters are significantly more expensive than Play Boosters and contain 16 cards (again, one is usually a token).

These packs include five rare or mythic rare cards, four uncommons, five commons, and one land card.

They frequently feature premium frame treatments, and 12 to 13 of the included cards are foil.

You can buy them individually or as a full box, but be prepared for a higher price point.

Commander Decks

Commander is Magic's most popular format, thanks to its "last player standing" gameplay and 100-card decks that are playable straight out of the box, making it an excellent entry point for newcomers.

The number of Commander decks per set has varied considerably this year. Aetherdrift included two, Tarkir: Dragonstorm featured five, and Final Fantasy offers four.

Edge of Eternities is taking a more modest approach with two decks: World Shaper and Counter Intelligence.

The World Shaper deck is Black, Red, and Green (Jund), and its description suggests players will "Sacrifice Lands" to "Grow Back Stronger."

Counter Intelligence, in Blue, Red, and White (Jeskai), allows players to "Boost Artifacts" and "Proliferate Counters."

Bundles and Prerelease Packs

As is now customary, a Bundle and Prerelease Pack will be available for the new set.

The Bundle contains 9 Play Boosters, one alternate-art promo card, a full set of 10 Full-Art Basic Lands in both foil and non-foil versions, a spindown life counter, and a storage box. The Prerelease Pack is intended for prerelease events.

Players open the pack and use the six Play Boosters inside to construct a 40-card deck. Prerelease kits are available at local game stores.
