Pokémon TCG Pocket Cards Feature Iconic Game Boy Locations

Author:Kristen Update:May 07,2025

Fans of the Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket have been captivated by the intricate card art for months, but recent discoveries are shedding light on hidden details that link these cards directly to the iconic Game Boy games. The excitement began when Reddit user asch_win noticed that the Spearow card features more than just the Normal/Flying type Pokémon. Surrounded by grass, a fence, trees, and two distinct buildings, the card's background includes what appears to be the Celadon City Department Store from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. Positioned just to the left of Celadon City, this setting corresponds to Route 16 in the Kanto region, known for its fenced-in grass patch where players can encounter Spearow.

It's clear that the developers, Creatures Inc. and DeNA, have meticulously crafted these cards to pay homage to the games that propelled Pokémon into a global phenomenon. The fun doesn't end with Spearow, as Reddit user jteede uncovered additional connections to early titles. These include a full-art Diglett card located just East of Vermillion City, a Haunter card set against the backdrop of the eerie Lavender Town tower, and more. Asch_win even used a magnifying glass to reveal that Supporter cards also contain references to specific locations from Pokémon's rich history.

While most card illustrations depict Pokémon in fantastical settings without direct ties to the lore, some, like a particular Pikachu variant, are recognizable as cards available in the real world. However, the most intriguing cards are exclusive to Pokémon TCG Pocket, where these Easter Eggs are nestled. Over the weekend, the Pokémon TCG Pocket community delved deeper into the cards, uncovering more references such as the S.S. Anne cruise liner hidden within a Gyarados full art card, and a series of Oddish, Venonat, and Bellsprout cards that weave a narrative around FireRed and LeafGreen’s seaside Snorlax.

Since its launch in October, Pokémon TCG Pocket has seen the release of only one additional booster expansion set, Mythical Island, bringing the total to four packs available to players. More expansions are anticipated in the future, with new cards occasionally being added through Wonder Pick Events and other updates. As Creatures and DeNA continue to introduce cards from various generations, fans should keep their eyes peeled for more hidden references.

In the meantime, stay updated with the current Wonder Pick event, which spotlights Charmander and Squirtle. Also, don't miss out on why the developers are being coy about whether pack choice matters.
