Paul Rudd Nostalgically Promotes Nintendo Switch 2, Echoing 90s SNES Ad

Author:Kristen Update:May 02,2025

Nintendo has enlisted the charm of actor Paul Rudd to promote the Nintendo Switch 2 in a new commercial that playfully nods to a memorable 90s advertisement he starred in for the Super Nintendo. The original 1991 commercial featured Rudd sporting a long black jacket, a beaded necklace, and a distinctive hairstyle as he confidently approached a drive-in movie theater with his SNES. He connected it to the big screen and started playing classics like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, F-Zero, and Sim City, drawing a curious crowd. The ad famously ended with the slogan, "Now you're playing with power."

In the latest Nintendo Switch 2 commercial, Rudd, despite aging 34 years, retains a surprisingly youthful appearance, complete with the iconic coat, necklace, and hairstyle. This time, he strides into a living room to set up the new console. Joining him are comedians Joe Lo Truglio and Jordan Carlos, along with a child who affectionately calls him "Uncle Paul." They dive into a game of Mario Kart World, utilizing the system's innovative GameChat feature. The group playfully ribs Rudd about his nostalgic attire and the exaggerated 90s commercial aesthetics, complete with a fog machine and a fan for added drama. The commercial wraps up with Rudd delivering a new slogan, "Now we're playing together," embracing the cheesy yet endearing spirit of the original while celebrating the communal joy of gaming.

IGN had the opportunity to sit down with Rudd to discuss his experience filming this sequel to his Nintendo commercial from over three decades ago. During the interview, Rudd revealed he might have worn his own beaded necklace in the original ad and enjoyed playing Mario Kart World between takes on set. However, he humorously noted that he wasn't allowed to take a Nintendo Switch 2 home. You can watch the full interview here:
