It’s finally here! After months of whispers and speculation, Nintendo has unveiled its next-generation console: the Nintendo Switch 2. While the name is understated, a closer look reveals significant evolution in Nintendo's beloved hybrid console. We've uncovered 30 fascinating details from the reveal trailer, showcasing how Nintendo has refined its design.
From redesigned face buttons to innovative Joy-Con functionality, here's a comprehensive breakdown:

- The Switch 2 retains a similar form factor to its predecessor, but with a noticeable increase in size. The main unit and Joy-Cons are larger—approximately 15% bigger overall.
- The vibrant colors of previous Joy-Cons are replaced with a sleek, dark grey finish across the entire console, giving it a more sophisticated, almost Steam Deck-like aesthetic.
- Despite the dark grey, a pop of color remains: colored rings around the analog sticks and inner edges of the console and Joy-Cons, echoing the original Switch's red and blue controllers. This also serves as a color-coded docking system.
- The Joy-Con attachment mechanism has changed. Instead of sliding rails, they now directly slot into the console, connecting via a protruding connector on the main unit. Rumors suggest magnetic attachment, similar to Apple's MagSafe.
- Newly designed triggers on the rear of each Joy-Con release the controllers from the main unit via an internal piston mechanism.
- The classic button layout is preserved: offset analog sticks, directional buttons, A, B, X, Y face buttons, and Plus/Minus buttons. The capture and home buttons remain in their usual positions.
- A new, unlabeled button is situated below the home button—its function remains a mystery.
- The L/R shoulder buttons and ZL/ZR triggers are present, with the latter appearing deeper and more rounded for improved comfort and usability.
- The analog sticks retain their low-profile design, but feature a smaller inner ring and thicker rims for enhanced grip.
- The NFC Amiibo interface may be present (though not visible), while the IR sensor from the original right Joy-Con is absent.
- SL and SR buttons are retained on the inner edges of each Joy-Con, enabling independent use. These buttons are significantly larger than their predecessors.
- The four player indicator LEDs are present, repositioned to the forward-facing edge of the connector.
- The connector port, Sync button, and an intriguing new component are visible between the SL and SR buttons.
- A small, clear lens above the connector may be a laser sensor, suggesting potential mouse functionality for the Joy-Cons.
- Redesigned wrist straps return, matching the Joy-Con's internal color scheme.
- The main console unit features a larger screen, though not quite edge-to-edge. The display technology remains unconfirmed.
- The top edge retains a headphone jack and ventilation grill (now split into three vents), along with redesigned power and volume buttons.
- The Game Card slot remains on the top edge, suggesting cartridge compatibility with the original Switch.
- A new USB-C port is present on the top edge, alongside the headphone jack—its purpose is currently unknown.
- Downward-firing speakers replace the rear-facing speakers of the original Switch.
- A new, full-length kickstand with multiple locking angles is featured on the rear of the console.
- The Switch 2 is dockable for TV connection, with a redesigned dock featuring rounded corners.
- A Joy-Con attachment peripheral is included, similar in design to the original.
- A new Mario Kart game is teased, featuring a 24-racer starting line and a new track, “Mario Bros. Circuit.”
- Ten characters are confirmed for the new Mario Kart game: Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Peach, Yoshi, Toad, Donkey Kong, Daisy, Rosalina, and Wario.
- Backwards compatibility is confirmed, although some games may not be supported.
- A 2025 release window is announced.
- A Nintendo Direct on April 2nd will reveal more details.
- A worldwide "Nintendo Switch 2 Experience" hands-on tour will take place from April to June, with ticket registration opening January 17th.
- These are the 30 key details revealed in the Switch 2 announcement trailer. Stay tuned for more updates!
