Exciting news has emerged from recent Nintendo filings, sparking speculation among fans about the potential reintroduction of the GameCube controller for use with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. According to reports from Nintendo Life, a new FCC filing for a "game controller" aligns with the specifications of the Switch 2 and hints at a wireless Bluetooth design.
Online communities, such as Famiboards, have delved into the details of these filings and believe that one of the images displays a label location strikingly similar to that found on the back of a GameCube controller, specifically behind the C-Stick. This has fueled speculation that the controller in question could be a revival of the classic GameCube design, potentially for use with Nintendo's Switch Online subscription service.
While there's a possibility this could be a new Switch 2 Pro Controller, the prevailing theory suggests its purpose may be linked to the Nintendo Switch Online service, which already supports wireless classic controllers for playing retro games. This development has ignited discussions about the potential addition of a GameCube library to the subscription service, fulfilling long-standing requests from Nintendo fans for classics from the GameCube era. So far, Nintendo has focused on NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy games for its online service, leaving fans to wonder if the GameCube could finally make a grand return on the Nintendo Switch 2.
In January, Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2 through a brief trailer that confirmed backward compatibility features and the inclusion of a second USB-C port. Details such as other games and the function of a mysterious new Joy-Con button were omitted, though speculation about a Joy-Con mouse feature gained some traction.
Last month, a Nintendo patent hinted at the possibility of Switch 2's Joy-Con controllers being attachable in an inverted position. The new system reportedly uses gyro mechanics similar to those in smartphones, without a screen lock. Unlike the original Switch, which used rails to secure the Joy-Cons, the new model employs magnets, allowing for flexible attachment on either side of the console. This minor hardware tweak could significantly enhance player customization, allowing for personalized button and port placement. If incorporated into the final product, this flipping capability could introduce novel gameplay mechanics.

Analysts predict that the Switch 2 will be priced at around $400, though some speculate it could reach $500. June has been floated as a possible launch month. While much remains unknown about the Switch 2, Nintendo has scheduled a Direct presentation for April 2 to shed more light on the console.
As we eagerly await further details, fans can enjoy a taste of the GameCube era with the recently released Metroid Prime Remastered on the current Nintendo Switch.
