Nintendo Cautiously Forecasts Switch 2 Sales Amid Tariff Uncertainty

Author:Kristen Update:May 16,2025

Nintendo has released a cautious sales forecast for the upcoming Switch 2 amid ongoing uncertainties related to tariffs. In its latest financial report, the company projected 15 million units sold for the Switch 2 and 45 million game sales for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026. The Switch 2 is set to hit the market on June 5.

Nintendo's forecast is based on the assumption that the U.S. tariffs implemented on April 10 will remain unchanged throughout the fiscal year. However, the company acknowledges that any adjustments to these tariffs could impact their projections. "We will continue to monitor the situation to respond to changes in market conditions," Nintendo stated.

Daniel Ahmad, Director of Research & Insights at Niko Partners, described the 15 million unit forecast as "conservative." In a tweet, Ahmad noted that Nintendo might be factoring in uncertainties around tariffs, pricing, and production, despite strong pre-order momentum. He added that Nintendo could potentially revise its forecast upward if the tariff situation improves, but highlighted ongoing challenges that complicate a console launch, including the risk of further tariff increases.

If the Switch 2 manages to sell 15 million units in its first year, it would rank among the most successful console launches ever, surpassing the original Switch's 14.87 million units sold in its debut year.

Demand for the Switch 2 appears to be significant. Following a delay due to tariffs, pre-orders opened on April 24, with the console's price set at $449.99. The response was as strong as anticipated. Additionally, Nintendo has warned U.S. customers who pre-ordered through the My Nintendo Store that delivery on the release date is not guaranteed due to high demand.
