Seventeen years after its initial release, NINJA GAIDEN 2 returns as NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black, the definitive edition. Team NINJA head, Fumihiko Yasuda, explained in an Xbox Wire interview that the team chose NINJA GAIDEN 2 for its strong action gameplay. The "Black" designation signifies this as the ultimate version, echoing the significance of NINJA GAIDEN Black for the first game in the series.

Yasuda revealed that NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black arose from fan feedback following the 2021 release of the NINJA GAIDEN Master Collection. Yasuda stated that NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black directly addresses concerns from core fans about Ryu Hayabusa's future, especially given NINJA GAIDEN 4's new protagonist. The story remains faithful to the original NINJA GAIDEN 2.

NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black is the fifth iteration of NINJA GAIDEN 2. The original launched exclusively on Xbox 360 in 2008, marking Team Ninja's first game not published by Tecmo. Koei Tecmo subsequently released NINJA GAIDEN Sigma 2 for PS3 in 2009, a modified version to allow for release in Germany, where the original was banned due to its graphic violence.

Four years later, NINJA GAIDEN Sigma 2 Plus arrived on PS Vita (2013), restoring the gore and adding features like Hero mode, Ninja race, and Turbo mode. Finally, the NINJA GAIDEN Master Collection (2021) encompassed NINJA GAIDEN Sigma, NINJA GAIDEN Sigma 2, and NINJA GAIDEN 3: Razor's Edge for PS4, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
