MultiVersus to Shut Down When Season 5 Concludes in May

Player First Games has announced that MultiVersus Season 5 will mark the end of the Warner Bros. platform fighting game, concluding on May 30, 2025, at 9 a.m. PST. The studio shared this news through a blog post on their official website. MultiVersus, which first launched on May 28 of the previous year, will kick off its final season on February 4, running until its scheduled closure in May 2025. At that point, support for online play will cease, but Player First assures that players can continue enjoying all their earned and purchased content offline through local gameplay and training modes.

“Most importantly, we want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supported MultiVersus,” stated a message from the MultiVersus team. “All of us at Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games have poured our heart and soul into this game. We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey.”

Player First also announced that real-money transactions for MultiVersus are no longer available as of today. However, fans can still use Gleamium and character tokens to access in-game content until support ends on May 30. Additionally, MultiVersus will be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store at that time.

The decision to end MultiVersus comes after Warner Bros. Discovery labeled the project as a major disappointment. In a financial call last November, the company revealed that MultiVersus had underperformed, leading to a $100 million writedown for its games sector. This added to a total of $300 million in losses following the launch of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in January. Just last week, Variety reported that Warner Bros. Games head David Haddad will be leaving the company after a challenging 2024.

"We took another $100 million plus impairment due to the underperforming releases, primarily MultiVersus this quarter, bringing total writedown year-to-date to over $300 million in our games business, a key factor in this year’s studio profit decline,” said chief financial officer Gunnar Wiedenfels during the November call.

Although the game will shut down just days after its one-year anniversary, Season 5 promises to end on a high note. Alongside the typical new content that seasonal updates bring, fans can look forward to new playable characters, Lola Bunny and Aquaman. Both will be available starting next week, with the Looney Tunes icon unlockable through a daily calendar reward and the DC superhero accessible via the battle pass.
