One of Stardew Valley's greatest charms is the diverse range of animals you can keep on your farm. This guide details how to acquire multiple pets, expanding your virtual homestead beyond a single furry or feathered friend.

Unlocking Multiple Pets

Initially, Stardew Valley limited players to a single pet per save. However, the 1.6 update changed this, allowing for a whole menagerie. To unlock the ability to adopt additional pets, you must first cultivate a maximum friendship level with your existing pet.

This involves daily care: fill their water bowl (except on rainy or snowy days) and pet them once daily (indicated by a heart above their head). Monitor their friendship level via the "Animals" tab in the pause menu. Once maxed out, Marnie will contact you about adopting more pets. If you didn't adopt a pet in your first year, this message arrives at the start of Year 2.

Adopting Multiple Pets

After receiving Marnie's message, visit her ranch shop (9:00 AM - 4:00 PM, closed Mondays and Tuesdays). Select the "Adopt Pets" option. You'll find 12 pet licenses:

Before or after adopting, visit Robin's shop to commission Pet Bowls (5,000g and 25 Hardwood each). These are crucial; they act as your pets' homes, preventing friendship decay and runaway pets.

Marnie also sells optional decorative items like doghouses and cat trees, which don't affect friendship levels.
