Mortal Kombat 1 Dev Chief Ed Boon Teases T-1000 Fatality and ‘Future DLC’

Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat 1's development chief, recently shared a sneak peek of the T-1000 Terminator's upcoming Fatality on social media, along with a tantalizing hint at future DLC. This reveal coincided with the announcement that Mortal Kombat 1 has surpassed five million copies sold, a significant jump from the previously reported four million.

Boon tweeted a short video showcasing one of the T-1000's Fatalities, a thrilling homage to the iconic truck chase scene from Terminator 2. The clip, which shows the T-1000 using a wrecked truck to dispatch its opponent, has generated considerable excitement among fans.

His accompanying tweet, however, is what truly ignited speculation within the Mortal Kombat community: "With Conan getting into player’s hands, we are excited to keep trucking forward with future DLC!" While this could simply refer to the imminent release of the T-1000, many believe it teases additional DLC characters beyond the current Khaos Reigns expansion.

The T-1000 is the final character slated for the Khaos Reigns expansion, following the additions of Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. The possibility of a third DLC character pack, or Kombat Pack 3, has been a topic of much discussion among fans, fueled by questions surrounding the game's sales performance.

Warner Bros. Discovery, however, has expressed continued confidence in the Mortal Kombat franchise. CEO David Zaslav stated in November that the company plans to double down on just four game titles, with Mortal Kombat being one of them. Adding further fuel to the speculation, Boon himself confirmed in September that NetherRealm had chosen its next game three years prior, while assuring fans of continued support for Mortal Kombat 1 for an extended period.

While many anticipate a third installment in the DC fighting game franchise, Injustice, neither NetherRealm nor Warner Bros. has confirmed this. The Injustice series previously saw releases in 2013 (Injustice: Gods Among Us) and 2017 (Injustice 2). The release of Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019, followed by the Mortal Kombat 1 soft reboot in 2023, broke the previous pattern of alternating between the two franchises.

In a June 2023 interview with IGN, Boon vaguely addressed this decision, citing the COVID-19 pandemic and the team's transition to a newer version of the Unreal Engine (Unreal Engine 4 for Mortal Kombat 1, compared to Unreal Engine 3 for Mortal Kombat 11) as contributing factors. He explicitly confirmed, however, that the door remains open for future Injustice games.
