Rumors are swirling that the popular MMORPG, FFXIV, might be making its way to mobile devices. A gaming industry insider, Kurakasis, alleges that Tencent Games and Square Enix are collaborating on a mobile port.

A Spotty Mobile History

This isn't Square Enix's first foray into mobile Final Fantasy titles. However, past results have been inconsistent. Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, while decent, didn't universally impress. Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia also met its end last year. Adapting a complex MMORPG like FFXIV to mobile is a significant challenge.

Unconfirmed Speculation

Crucially, this remains unverified. Square Enix hasn't officially commented. However, past collaborations between Square Enix and Tencent offer some context. In 2018, the two companies discussed potential collaborations, and in 2021, then-president Yosuke Matsuda hinted at ongoing projects with Tencent. Thus, the rumor isn't entirely unfounded.
