Author:Kristen Update:Apr 28,2025

Microsoft is taking another step in integrating artificial intelligence into its products by introducing AI Copilot into the Xbox experience. This new feature, designed to enhance your gaming, will offer advice, help you track your gaming progress, and perform various tasks to make your gaming experience smoother and more enjoyable.

The rollout of Copilot for gaming will begin with Xbox Insiders through the Xbox mobile app in the near future. This AI, which replaced Cortana in 2023 and is already integrated into Windows, will come with a set of initial features. You'll be able to use it to install games on your Xbox remotely, check your play history, review achievements, browse your game library, or get recommendations on what to play next. While playing, you can interact with Copilot directly on the Xbox app, receiving answers in a manner similar to how it functions on Windows.

One of the most highlighted features at launch is Copilot's role as a gaming assistant. You can ask it game-related questions, like how to defeat a challenging boss or solve a puzzle, and it will pull answers from Bing, referencing various online guides, websites, wikis, and forums. Soon, this functionality will extend to the Xbox app as well. Microsoft is committed to ensuring the accuracy of the information provided by Copilot, collaborating with game studios to align with their vision and directing players back to the original sources of information.

Microsoft's vision for Copilot extends beyond the initial features. In a press briefing, spokespeople discussed potential future uses, such as serving as a walkthrough assistant to explain game functions, remembering item locations within games, or helping locate new items. Additionally, Copilot could assist in competitive gaming by offering real-time strategy tips and analyzing gameplay engagements. While these are exploratory ideas, Microsoft is keen on integrating Copilot deeply into Xbox gameplay. They also confirmed plans to collaborate with both first-party and third-party studios for game integration.

Regarding privacy and user control, Xbox Insiders will have the option to opt out during the preview phase. However, Microsoft has not ruled out the possibility of making Copilot mandatory in the future. A spokesperson emphasized that during the mobile preview, players can control their interactions with Copilot, including access to conversation history and the actions it performs on their behalf. Microsoft promises to remain transparent about data collection, usage, and user choices regarding personal data.

Beyond player-focused applications, Microsoft plans to showcase how developers can utilize Copilot at the upcoming Game Developers Conference, indicating a broader integration strategy across the gaming industry.
