The much-anticipated Marvel's Blade reboot has faced numerous delays and setbacks, sparking considerable uncertainty about its release. However, recent developments offer a renewed sense of optimism.
Five years after its initial announcement, the Blade reboot remains unreleased. Despite significant criticism leveled at Marvel for the protracted production, hope persists. Will this film ever reach theaters?
Following a string of negative updates, the project is finally receiving some positive news. The Hollywood Reporter indicates that production isn't stopping. Initially conceived as a period piece, the reboot is now transitioning to a modern setting. While plot specifics are scarce, a script rewrite is planned for the summer, concurrently with the search for a new director.
Reports recently suggested the reboot had returned to the drawing board due to dissatisfaction from key figures, further dampening anticipation. Yet, a positive development has emerged: the script is undergoing further revisions, aiming for completion by summer's end. Simultaneously, the team is actively seeking a replacement for director Yann Demange, who departed after nearly two years. If these changes proceed smoothly, the film's prospects are significantly improved. However, the rewrites could lead to substantial narrative alterations.
The original concept involved a 1920s period setting, centering on Blade's daughter rather than Blade himself. Mia Goth's Lilith was slated as the vampire antagonist targeting Blade's daughter. Marvel Comics features two versions of Lilith—Dracula's daughter and the monstrous Mother of Demons—though the film's adaptation remained unspecified. The shift to a modern setting will likely necessitate significant plot adjustments.
Sources indicate previous directorial changes stemmed from concerns about director-project compatibility. Bassam Tariq's departure reportedly resulted from this issue. Star Mahershala Ali, provided with a list of directors by Marvel, opted to conduct his own search for the ideal fit. This search primarily focused on filmmakers lacking prior experience with major studios, presenting a unique challenge. Ali's vision for the reboot as "his Black Panther" explains his unwavering commitment. Mia Goth remains attached, though her role's status is unclear. Delroy Lindo and Aaron Pierre, however, are no longer involved, having departed following the 2023 writers' and actors' strike. The current release date remains November 2025, but this, too, is subject to change.
The current projected release date for Blade is November 7, 2025.
