Marvel Snap has returned and developers wish to switch publishers

The temporary US shutdown of TikTok on January 19th unexpectedly impacted Marvel Snap, the popular card game published by Nuverse (a ByteDance subsidiary). The game, developed by Second Dinner Studios, became inaccessible for a day before being partially restored. However, in-app purchases remain unavailable.

This disruption, according to an official Platform X statement, stems from political risks surrounding TikTok's 90-day extension to sell a 50% stake to a US-based entity. Failure to secure this deal could lead to further service interruptions for TikTok and related projects like Marvel Snap.

The developers are exploring a publisher change and internalizing some services to mitigate future disruptions. While PC users via Steam could still access the game, many players experienced authorization problems and expressed frustration over the lack of prior warning, particularly concerning in-game purchases made before the shutdown.

Second Dinner Studios has promised further updates. The official Platform X statement assures players: "Marvel Snap is here to stay. We're working hard to restore the game as quickly as possible, and we'll keep players informed of our progress." The incident highlights the vulnerability of apps associated with companies facing significant political scrutiny.
