Marvel Comics to Relaunch Captain America With Batman Writer Chip Zdarsky

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 04,2025

Marvel Comics is set to reboot its Captain America monthly series with a fresh creative team and storyline focusing on Steve Rogers' early days post-thaw. This new series will even depict Cap's very first encounter with Doctor Doom.

As announced at the ComicsPro retailer convention, the series will be penned by Chip Zdarsky (Batman, Daredevil) and illustrated by Valerio Schiti (G.O.D.S., The Avengers), with colors by Frank D'Armata. This team previously collaborated on Marvel's 2017 2-in-One.

The series begins shortly after Steve's rediscovery and revival in the contemporary Marvel universe. His initial mission, following his re-enlistment in the US Army, involves a collaboration with the Howling Commandos to infiltrate a Latveria recently seized by a young, ambitious Doctor Doom. While the series will eventually transition to the present-day Marvel setting, this initial arc's events will significantly impact Zdarsky and Schiti's overarching narrative.

"I've been a huge Captain America fan for decades," Zdarsky stated. "Getting to write the actual Captain America title, after writing the grizzled, older Cap in Avengers: Twilight, feels surreal! We're exploring Cap's early modern-era experiences with a twist that will surprise readers. I'm thrilled, especially with Valerio and Frank's incredible art!"

Zdarsky continued, "My approach mirrors my Daredevil run—a grounded, human perspective on Cap in this new world. Steve Rogers embodies the best of humanity, and I aim to reflect that on every page."

"Captain America is one of my all-time favorites," Schiti commented. "Reuniting with Chip and Frank after Marvel 2-In-One is fantastic. We're crafting a story that perfectly balances heart, action, and entertainment! Surprisingly, I found myself focusing more on Steve Rogers, rather than just Captain America."

Schiti added, "Chip's script is so clever and engaging that readers will connect deeply with Steve's inner world. He's the living embodiment of truth, justice, and freedom. He fought Nazism, 'died,' and returned to fight again. That's immense pressure, especially considering he's in his late twenties in this era!"

Captain America #1 releases July 2nd, 2025.
