Favreau's Oswald Series Hits Disney+ Soon

PlayDisney veteran Jon Favreau is collaborating with the entertainment giant on a Disney+ series reviving classic animated star Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

According to Deadline's exclusive report, Favreau will combine live-action and animation techniques to bring Oswald to Disney's streaming platform. Serving as both writer and producer, Favreau's take on the vintage character remains shrouded in mystery regarding specific storyline and casting details.

Despite Oswald's significant place in Disney's animation legacy, the character's original tenure with the company was surprisingly brief. Created by Walt Disney himself, Oswald starred in just 26 silent shorts between 1927-1928 before becoming embroiled in rights disputes that transferred ownership to Universal. As detailed in our comprehensive Disney centennial retrospective, Oswald's loss plunged the young studio into crisis while simultaneously paving the way for Mickey Mouse's creation.

After reclaiming Oswald's rights in 2006, Disney reintroduced the character in 2022 with his first new short film in 95 years. Now the company appears poised to expand Oswald's role beyond nostalgia into contemporary storytelling. While no release date has been announced, Favreau's hybrid project suggests Oswald may soon enjoy a substantial comeback.

Currently balancing multiple Disney franchises, Favreau continues shaping Star Wars' future through projects like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka while maintaining his longstanding Marvel connections. His directorial resume includes 2019's groundbreaking Lion King remake, with The Mandalorian and Grogu feature film slated for 2026.

Oswald's anticipated Disney+ debut follows recent alternative interpretations of the character. Just last year, Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole reimagined the classic cartoon icon as a horror movie protagonist, featuring Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson.
