IDW's TMNT Reunites Brothers at IGN Fan Fest 2025

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 11,2025

IDW has been exceptionally ambitious with its approach to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) franchise in recent years. In 2024, they relaunched the flagship TMNT comic with writer Jason Aaron at the helm, launched the sequel to the best-selling TMNT: The Last Ronin, and introduced a ninja-heavy crossover with TMNT x Naruto. Moving into 2025, the main TMNT series has seen a new regular artist and a refreshed status quo. While the four Turtles, Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo, are reunited, their relationships are strained.

During IGN Fan Fest 2025, we had the opportunity to discuss with Jason Aaron and TMNT x Naruto writer Caleb Goellner about the future of their series. Key topics included the evolution of their stories, the overarching mission for the TMNT line, and the potential reconciliation of the Turtles. Here's what we discovered.

The Mission Statement of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

IDW has initiated multiple TMNT series in a short period, with the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 becoming a top-seller in 2024, moving around 300,000 copies. We asked Jason Aaron about the guiding vision behind the TMNT line. Aaron emphasized a return to the essence of the original Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird TMNT comics from the Mirage era.

"For me, the guiding principle was revisiting the original Mirage Studios series," Aaron explained to IGN. "Last year marked the 40th anniversary of that series, which introduced the Turtles to the world. That was my first experience with the characters, before the movies or cartoons. I wanted to recapture the grittiness and the dynamic action scenes of those grimy turtles fighting in New York City alleyways."

Aaron's vision extends beyond nostalgia, aiming to push the characters forward after their previous adventures in the IDW series. "We're looking to show how they've matured and reached a turning point, diverging into different paths before coming back together to reclaim their heroism," he added.

The success of TMNT #1, along with other major comic launches like Marvel's Ultimate Universe, DC's Absolute line, and Skybound's Energon Universe, indicates a strong demand for reboots and streamlined franchise entries. Aaron shared his perspective on this trend, "It's evident there's a desire for accessible entry points into these beloved franchises. I'm thrilled to contribute to this wave, focusing on creating stories that resonate with both long-time fans and newcomers."

Aaron also highlighted the joy of collaborating with a talented roster of artists in the first six issues, praising their contribution to the excitement around the series. "Working with such an incredible team has been a highlight, and I believe our passion for the Turtles and good storytelling shines through in our work," he noted.

A TMNT Family Reunion

Aaron's narrative began with the Turtles scattered globally, each facing unique challenges. By the end of the initial storyline, they reunite in New York City, though not harmoniously. Aaron expressed satisfaction in reuniting the brothers, yet acknowledged the tension between them.

"Exploring the individual journeys of each Turtle was exciting, but the real thrill comes from seeing them together," Aaron said. "Their reunion is fraught with friction, as they struggle to reconnect in a changed city, weaponized against them by a new Foot Clan villain. This scenario sets the stage for a compelling narrative about overcoming adversity and rediscovering their bond as heroes."

With issue #6, Juan Ferreyra joined as the regular artist, bringing a consistent visual style to the series. Aaron praised Ferreyra's work, "His art perfectly captures the essence of the Turtles' adventures, from alleyway brawls to rooftop chases across Manhattan. His contribution is invaluable to the series' ongoing success."

Merging the TMNT and Naruto Universes

The TMNT x Naruto crossover, crafted by Caleb Goellner and artist Hendry Prasetya, introduces a world where the Turtles and the Uzumaki Clan coexist, encountering each other for the first time. Goellner credited Prasetya for the Turtles' redesign, fitting seamlessly into the Naruto universe.

"I'm thrilled with how the Turtles have been integrated into this world," Goellner told IGN. "The redesigns are phenomenal, and I hope they inspire new merchandise. My role was minimal; I suggested incorporating masks reminiscent of Naruto, and the result was beyond my expectations."

The crossover also offers delightful character interactions, with Goellner enjoying the dynamics between the heroes. "Ensuring every character has their moment is crucial," he noted. "I particularly relate to Kakashi as a father figure, navigating the challenges of mentoring young heroes. The chemistry between Raph and Sakura, both team powerhouses, is also a highlight."

Looking ahead, Goellner teased exciting developments as the ninja clans converge on Big Apple Village, including a major TMNT villain requested by Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto. "The anticipation for this villain's appearance is high, and I'm eager to see how fans respond," he said.
