Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment Revealed for Nintendo Switch 2

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 27,2025

No Nintendo console would be complete without a Zelda game, and the Nintendo Switch 2 keeps the tradition alive, albeit in an unexpected way. During today's Nintendo Direct, we discovered that Koei Tecmo is developing a new entry in the Hyrule Warriors series: a prequel to Tears of the Kingdom titled Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, set to release this winter.

PlayHyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment dives into the lore of the ancient history seen in Tears of the Kingdom, featuring a cast of characters including Zelda, Rauru, Sonia, and other Secret Stone holders. The game narrates Zelda's journey after she travels back in time, where she allies with the last of the Zonai, Rauru, his sister Mineru, and his wife Sonia, to battle Ganondorf and his forces.

This marks the third installment in the Hyrule Warriors series, following the original Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which served as a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Age of Calamity was notable for its slightly unexpected narrative twist on the known story of Breath of the Wild, and it will be intriguing to see if Age of Imprisonment follows suit with its own narrative surprises. We awarded Age of Calamity a 9/10, praising it as "a joy to play and discover" and "a blast from start to finish."
