1047 Games, the creators of the popular "Halo-meets-Portal" shooter, Splitgate, have announced a sequel launching in 2025. This eagerly awaited follow-up, Splitgate 2, promises a fresh take on the fast-paced arena combat that captivated players in the original.
A Fresh Perspective on Portal Combat
The cinematic announcement trailer showcases a visually stunning game built using Unreal Engine 5. While retaining the core portal-based gameplay that defined the original, Splitgate 2 aims for a significantly enhanced experience. CEO Ian Proulx stated their goal is to create a game with enduring appeal, requiring the development of tools to support a deeply satisfying gameplay loop. Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing, emphasized a re-evaluation of the portal mechanics, aiming for a system rewarding skilled players without making portal usage mandatory for success.
The game will be free-to-play and feature a new faction system, adding strategic depth. Three distinct factions—Aeros, Meridian, and Sabrask—each offer unique playstyles, allowing players to choose an approach that best suits their preferences. Importantly, the developers confirmed Splitgate 2 is not a hero shooter, maintaining the core arena combat focus.
More Than Just Portals: New Maps, Weapons, and Dual Wielding Returns
The trailer teased new maps, weapons, and the return of dual-wielding, a feature beloved by fans of the original. While specific gameplay details are under wraps until Gamescom 2024, the developers assure fans the trailer accurately reflects the game's visual fidelity and core mechanics.
Expanding the Lore: A Mobile Companion App
Splitgate 2 will not include a single-player campaign. However, a mobile companion app will provide access to comics expanding the game's lore, allowing players to learn more about the three factions and even discover which faction best aligns with their playstyle through an in-app quiz.
Platforms and Release Date
Splitgate 2 is slated for release in 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. The combination of enhanced visuals, refined gameplay, and the addition of factions promises a significant evolution of the Splitgate formula, setting the stage for a compelling and long-lasting sequel.
