US Government Designates Tencent as Chinese Military Firm

Pentagon List Includes Tencent, Causing Stock Dip; Company Disputes Designation

Tencent, a prominent Chinese technology conglomerate, has been added to the U.S. Department of Defense's (DOD) list of companies with ties to the Chinese military, specifically the People's Liberation Army (PLA). This inclusion stems from a 2020 executive order by former President Trump restricting U.S. investment in Chinese military entities. The order mandates divestment from listed companies and prohibits new investments.

The DOD list identifies companies believed to contribute to PLA modernization through technology, expertise, or research. While initially comprising 31 companies, the list has since expanded, leading to previous delistings from the New York Stock Exchange. Tencent's inclusion in the latest update, released January 7th, triggered a swift response.

Tencent's Rebuttal

In a statement to Bloomberg, Tencent categorically denied being a military company or supplier, asserting that the listing doesn't directly impact its operations. However, the company expressed its intention to collaborate with the DOD to clarify any misunderstandings.

This year, the DOD removed several companies previously listed, indicating a process for reassessment and potential removal. Precedents exist where companies successfully lobbied for their removal after engaging with the DOD, suggesting a similar strategy for Tencent.

Market Impact and Tencent's Global Reach

The DOD's announcement resulted in a noticeable decline in Tencent's stock value. A 6% drop on January 6th, followed by a continued downward trend, highlights the market's sensitivity to this designation. As the world's largest video game company by investment, and a global tech giant, Tencent's status carries significant financial implications.

Tencent's extensive gaming portfolio, managed through Tencent Games, includes ownership stakes in renowned studios like Epic Games, Riot Games, Techland, Don't Nod, Remedy Entertainment, and FromSoftware. Furthermore, Tencent has invested in numerous other game developers and related businesses, such as Discord. This broad reach underscores the potential ramifications of its inclusion on the DOD list.
