The inaugural Google Pixel launched in October 2016, marking the beginning of Google's foray into premium smartphones. It was among the first to adopt USB-C technology and boasted a 12.3-megapixel camera. The lineup included both a standard Pixel and a larger Pixel XL with an expanded display.

Just a year later, in October 2017, the Google Pixel 2 hit the market with enhanced camera capabilities, including optical image stabilization. Notably, it was the first Pixel to ditch the headphone jack, although it did improve upon some Bluetooth issues from its predecessor.

The Google Pixel 3, launched in October 2018, brought significant design changes with slimmer bezels and a higher-resolution, 5.5-inch display. It also introduced wireless charging, freeing users from the constraints of USB-C cables.

In 2019, Google ventured into the mid-range market with the Google Pixel 3a, a more affordable alternative to the flagship Pixel 3. While it omitted some features, it retained the flagship's impressive back camera system. You can read our detailed review of the Pixel 3a to learn more about its initial reception.

The Google Pixel 4, released in October 2019, focused on internal enhancements, including a 90Hz display refresh rate and camera upgrades such as 2x optical zoom. Additionally, it came equipped with 6GB of RAM, an upgrade from the 4GB in the Pixel 3.

Similar to the Pixel 3a, the Google Pixel 4a, launched in August 2020, excluded some features from the Pixel 4 but made strides in display brightness, reaching a peak of 796 nits. It was also more power-efficient, offering an extra four hours of battery life compared to the flagship model.

Launched in October 2020, the Google Pixel 5 prioritized battery life with a 4080mAh battery, providing nearly 50% more life per charge than the Pixel 4. It also incorporated the increased display brightness from the Pixel 4a, a fingerprint scanner, and added reverse charging capabilities.

The Google Pixel 5a, released in August 2021, closely resembles the Pixel 5 but features a slightly larger 6.34-inch display. With a 4680mAh battery, it offered longer battery life, though it lacked the wireless charging feature present in the Pixel 5.

The Google Pixel 6, unveiled in October 2021, introduced a striking new design with cameras integrated into a bar. Despite its advanced technology, it was priced $100 less than the Pixel 5. Its camera system saw significant improvements, particularly in low-light conditions, and the Pro version was a standout model of the year.

Arriving later than most 'a' models in July 2022, the Google Pixel 6a scaled back the refresh rate to 60Hz and reduced RAM to 6GB. The most notable difference was its 12.2MP main camera, a significant drop from the 50MP camera on the Pixel 6.

Launched in October 2022, the Google Pixel 7 offered modest upgrades, including an improved fingerprint sensor and a redesigned camera bar. While not groundbreaking, it was a solid choice for those upgrading from older Pixel models. The larger Pixel 7 Pro was our preferred model in comparisons.

The Google Pixel 7a, released on May 10, 2023, featured a 64MP main camera and retained the 90Hz refresh rate and 8GB of RAM. Despite its slightly smaller size, it matched the Pixel 7's screen size and battery life, though the Pixel 7 offered faster charging with 20W capabilities.

In 2023, Google shook up the Pixel lineup with the Google Pixel Fold, featuring a 7.6-inch display when open and a traditional display on the outside. It incorporated beloved camera features from the Pixel 7 Pro and offered unique camera angles using the foldable design as a stand.

Launched on October 12, 2023, the Google Pixel 8 offered a notable upgrade with a peak brightness of 2000 nits and a 120Hz refresh rate. It followed closely on the heels of the innovative Google Pixel Fold.

The Google Pixel 8a, launched on May 14, 2024, opted for Gorilla Glass 3 instead of the Victus variant. While it shares an OLED display and similar performance with the Pixel 8, its 64MP camera contrasts with the Pixel 8's 50MP, leading to higher pixel count but less depth.

Launched in August 2024, the Google Pixel 9 broke tradition by not releasing in October. It introduced Satellite SOS, a new design, and a triple rear camera. The Pro series even upped the RAM to 16GB, a significant advancement for the Pixel line.

With a taller and thinner design, it offers a larger screen, with OLED displays on both the 6.3-inch outer and 8-inch inner screens. Equipped with three rear cameras and 16GB of RAM, it's currently Google's premier offering.

Anticipation is high for the Google Pixel 10 lineup, expected to include the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL, with a release slated for Fall 2025. Traditionally, Google has favored October releases, but given the August 2024 launch of the Pixel 9, there's a chance the Pixel 10 might follow suit in August 2025.
