What a year for Nintendo to finally unveil the Switch 2. The hardware itself is everything fans could have hoped for in a successor to the beloved original Switch — a more powerful iteration of the console millions adore. However, the global economic uncertainty has made the Switch 2 a more complex proposition than its predecessor.
This complexity is compounded by the ongoing trade war between the United States and China. With a price tag of $450 USD for the console and $80 USD for Mario Kart World, the Switch 2 has become a focal point amid the escalating costs of games and gaming hardware, both in the US and internationally.
To gain insights into global reactions to the Switch 2, I consulted with editors from IGN's international branches spanning Europe, South America, and Asia. The reception to the Switch 2 is mixed. The hardware enhancements, including a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR, and 4K output, are widely praised. However, the absence of an OLED screen is considered a significant drawback by many.
IGN Italy's editor-in-chief, Alessandro Digioia, shared that their readers are largely dissatisfied with the Switch 2. "The main concerns are the price, the lack of an OLED screen, no trophy/achievement system, and a modest launch lineup," Digioia noted. "While some third-party announcements were welcomed, many expected more from Nintendo's first-party titles."
Echoing similar sentiments, Pedro Pestana from IGN Portugal said, "I'm not that impressed with the Switch 2; it's essentially an enhanced version of the original without the novelty factor. But it all boils down to the games, and Mario Kart World looked impressive."
In contrast, regions like Benelux and Turkey seem more receptive to the Switch 2's hardware improvements. Nick Nijiland from IGN Benelux remarked, "Despite the price, the console has been well-received in our region. It sold out within hours, and our Discord server saw a huge influx of new members when we announced pre-orders."
Ersin Kilic from IGN Turkey noted positive feedback on the hardware, "Nintendo has addressed criticisms from the original Switch. The new LCD screen, though not OLED, is much improved. However, the lack of Hall Effect in Joy-Con 2 was the most criticized aspect."
Kamui Ye from IGN China provided a balanced perspective, "The reveal event was met with disappointment due to the lackluster launch titles and confusing regional pricing. The absence of new Mario, Legend of Zelda, or Animal Crossing games was a significant negative. Yet, core fans remain optimistic about Nintendo's long-term plans, prioritizing backward compatibility and hardware refinements like magnetic Joy-Cons."

The Switch 2 is set to launch at $450 USD in the United States, with pre-orders delayed due to ongoing tariff issues stemming from President Trump's policies. This situation is prompting Nintendo to reconsider its launch strategy for the June 5 release date.
In regions not directly affected by these tariffs, like Europe, pre-orders are already underway. Antonia Dressler from IGN Germany stated, "In Germany, tariffs aren't a concern for the Switch 2. However, the pricing is a significant issue, with many comparing it unfavorably to the PS5."
The Switch 2's pricing positions it directly against competitors like the PS5 and Xbox Series X globally, complicating consumer choices. Zaid Kriel from IGN Africa noted, "The Switch 2's price is now comparable to the PS5 and Xbox Series X, no longer the cheaper alternative, especially with the rise in game prices."
In Brazil, the tariff war exacerbates the pricing issue. Matheus de Lucca from IGN Brazil explained, "The weak Brazilian Real and potential price increases in the US could make the Switch 2 unaffordable for many in Latin America."
Japan presents a unique scenario with a region-locked version at a lower price point. Daniel Robson from IGN Japan said, "Nintendo couldn't exceed 50,000 yen in Japan due to the weak yen. The region lock prevents importation, ensuring the console supports only Japanese games and accounts, a direct result of global trade dynamics."
Despite hardware and tariff concerns, the most significant issue raised globally is the pricing of software. Nintendo's decision to price Mario Kart World at $80 USD has sparked widespread debate, especially as other launch window games range from $70 USD to as low as $10 USD.
Alessandro Digioia from IGN Italy emphasized, "Game pricing is the biggest issue for our readers and the Italian gaming community. Nintendo's new pricing structure, especially with some first-party games at €90, is seen as unjustifiable, particularly with the recent price hikes in the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S era."
Antonia Dressler from IGN Germany added, "The €90 for Mario Kart World is a record for a video game here, and the $10 charge for Switch 2 Welcome Tour has caused further backlash. Nintendo seems excessively greedy right now."
In mainland China, where an official release is not planned, gamers may turn to the gray market. Kamui Ye from IGN China observed, "Game prices in Hong Kong and Japan are lower than Western markets, and most players find the official Switch 2 price acceptable. Compared to handheld PCs like the Steam Deck, the Switch 2 is considered more cost-effective, especially with backward compatibility."
While the Switch 2 promises to be a successful upgrade to one of the most popular consoles, the looming threat of $80 games amidst economic challenges has soured the outlook for many prospective buyers. The impact of international politics on stock availability and the launch in North America adds further uncertainty. However, the excitement around the Switch 2 remains palpable, albeit with more reservations than usual for a Nintendo product.
