First Glimpse of Nintendo Switch 2 Cartridge Revealed

Author:Kristen Update:May 20,2025

Nintendo has given us our first detailed look at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, ahead of the console's much-anticipated launch next month. In the latest video released through the Nintendo Today app, we get a glimpse of the official Switch 2 carry case, designed to hold up to six cartridges from both the original Nintendo Switch and the new Switch 2.

As previously announced, Switch 2 cartridges are identical in size and shape to their Switch 1 counterparts, which means the new console will maintain a single cartridge slot compatible with games from both generations. The notable distinction, however, is the color of the cartridges. Switch 2 cartridges are distinctively red, a universal design choice not limited to just the Mario Kart World cartridge featured in Nintendo's video. If you haven't yet downloaded the Nintendo Today app, you can catch the video on X / Twitter, courtesy of OatmealDome.

The top of the cartridge's printed design sticker features the Switch 2 logo, setting it apart from the original Nintendo Switch design. The official Switch 2 carrying case also accommodates the console with the Joy-Con 2 attached, along with space for six cartridges and two Joy-Con 2 straps. Despite the new color and logo, the Switch 2 cartridges retain the same foul-tasting coating that Nintendo applies to deter users from placing them in their mouths. "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption," Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta explained to GameSpot. "We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."

The Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled for release on June 5, 2025, just three weeks away. Excitement is building, and a recent report indicates that Nintendo's key electronics partner, Samsung, is already exploring a hardware refresh for the Switch 2, possibly including an OLED screen upgrade.
