Gaming Mouse Catches Fire, Triggers Near-Disaster

Author:Kristen Update:Feb 21,2025

A redditor's gaming mouse spontaneously combusted, nearly causing a house fire. The user, u/lommelinn, reported waking to the smell of smoke and discovering their Gigabyte M6880X wired optical mouse engulfed in flames. The incident occurred while their PC was in sleep mode.

The resulting damage was significant. Images show the mouse's top rear panel completely melted, while the underside remained relatively intact. The desk and mousepad also sustained melt damage. The cause of the fire, considering the mouse's low power draw (5V at 0.5A via USB 2.0), remains a mystery.

Gigabyte, the manufacturer, acknowledged the incident and launched an investigation, contacting the user to offer support. The user expressed disbelief, stating their PC was in sleep mode and that the USB port tested fine. The incident highlights an unexpected and alarming potential failure mode for seemingly ordinary computer peripherals.
