Fields of Mistria charmed its way into players' hearts upon its 2024 Steam Early Access debut, earning overwhelmingly positive reviews. Three months later, a major update enhanced the experience, and another is slated for March 2025. For $13.99, you can join the farming fun on Steam. But is it worth the price tag in its current, Early Access state?
Fields of Mistria didn't just receive glowing reviews; it topped The Escapist's best games of 2024 and snagged Patch Magazine's 2024 Game of the Year award. Its charming characters, engaging dialogue, and compelling quests create a captivating experience. The romance aspects are expertly handled, and the farming, fishing, mining, and crafting mechanics are equally satisfying. Over 100 hours of playtime later, and I'm still uncovering new things to do, making it a truly worthwhile investment—a sentiment echoed by many Steam reviewers.
Like similar titles, Fields of Mistria casts you as a budding farmer building a new life in a close-knit community. However, it excels in its execution. Unlike the sometimes one-dimensional NPCs in games like *Harvest Moon* and *Story of Seasons*, Mistria's residents are richly developed, even those not involved in romance. Each character boasts varied greetings and conversation points, preventing repetitive interactions. Combined with detailed character designs and seasonal outfits, it's easy to become invested in the town's inhabitants. Dell, for instance, with her charming fall outfit detail (that stick in her pocket!), perfectly exemplifies the care put into each character's design.
While comparisons to *Stardew Valley* are inevitable—both share a nostalgic pixel art style and core gameplay—Fields of Mistria sets itself apart with its beginner-friendly approach. Helpful tips and occasional gifts from villagers ease players into the farming life, encouraging interaction with the community from the start. A clear itinerary guides newcomers, fostering a welcoming atmosphere and incentivizing exploration of Mistria and its residents.
The gameplay is forgiving yet engaging, offering a satisfying level of challenge. This has earned it comparisons to *Animal Crossing* as well. Many quests span multiple days, particularly those involving restoring community spaces like the mill and inn. Uncovering your crush's favorite gifts, and collecting seasonal fish and insects for the museum, adds depth and replayability. (Need a hand? We've got you covered!)
The sheer volume of content alone justifies the price, but more is on the horizon. Currently, Fields of Mistria masterfully immerses players in its small but richly detailed community. Ten romance options are available, with two more—including Caldarus, the dragon—on their way. Future updates will increase the relationship level cap to ten hearts, introducing marriage, children, and more.
NOTE: Fields of Mistria is currently in Early Access, and content is subject to change. The above information is accurate as of Version 0.12.4 and will be updated as necessary.
