"Elden Ring's Nightreign Patch Surprise-Drops Enhanced Boss"

Yesterday, patch 1.01.3 went live for Elden Ring Nightreign—a modest update focused on bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements. Most players likely saw it and moved on. But slowly, a few began noticing a new option in their Expeditions menu.

A new Gaping Jaw undertaking, labeled the "Everdark Sovereign," had appeared. It quickly became clear that FromSoftware had quietly delivered on its promise to introduce enhanced bosses to Elden Ring Nightreign this month, catching players off guard as they stumbled upon the new challenge. Watching the community piece it together late into the night was truly exhilarating.

Each week, a new Sovereign will emerge in Limveld, with Gaping Jaw as the first, followed by Sentient Pest and Darkdrift Knight, both receiving tougher, upgraded forms.

Everdark Sovereigns are only accessible online, and each one remains active for exactly one week before being replaced by the next. You must have defeated the base version of a Nightlord to unlock its Everdark Sovereign variant.

Early player reports confirm that this upgraded Gaping Jaw is genuinely more formidable. Videos of the battles show the empowered Adel darting across the battlefield, summoning violent storms, and swiftly defeating full parties of players.

To me, it echoes Monster Hunter’s post-launch Tempered monster upgrades, designed to grow in challenge as players’ skills and power escalate over time.

What’s the reward for defeating an Everdark Sovereign? A brand-new shop in the hub now lets you spend Sovereign Sigils earned from these victories—and this shop itself is a significant addition. Alongside exclusive Relics and gear, the Sigils allow you to alter the Roundtable Hold’s lighting, unlock currently available skins, and set dynamic earth statuses. The latter has been a top community request, and it’s excellent to see it implemented.

The introduction of enhanced bosses has already breathed fresh life and challenge into Nightreign, and the promise of more to come is compelling, especially with these short-term objectives to pursue.

Bandai Namco is also hinting this is just the start: “This is only the beginning of the Everdark Sovereign cycle. As the power of the Night ebbs and wanes, the Sovereigns will soon return to the abyss they came from.” We already know Elden Ring Nightreign is slated for full updates ahead, and if this is an early sign of what’s to come, the long-term future for FromSoft’s new co-op survival action game looks promising.
