Author:Kristen Update:Dec 17,2024

Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree expansion finally unveils the fate of Dragonlord Placidusax, a long-standing mystery. The expansion reveals the source of two of the boss's missing heads.

This section contains spoilers for Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree.

Dragonlord Placidusax, a notoriously difficult secret boss found in Crumbling Farum Azula, is encountered in a weakened state, missing three heads and a wing. The expansion reveals the likely culprit: Bayle the Dread.

Placidusax's Missing Heads and Bayle the Dread's Injuries

Reddit user Matrix_030 highlighted that two of Placidusax's missing heads are embedded in Bayle the Dread's neck, a testament to their brutal past encounter. Bayle also shows significant damage, lacking wings and limbs, seemingly ripped off during the fight.

The Talisman of the Dread, found in Elder's Hovel, provides further context. It describes Bayle's challenge to the ancient Dragonlord, resulting in "grievous mutual injury."

Despite their injuries, both dragons remain formidable foes in Elden Ring, boasting massive health pools and complex attacks. Bayle's initial aggression makes summoning Spirit Ashes challenging, requiring strategic use of effects like the Opaline Bubble Tear.

While the fate of Placidusax's third head remains unknown, many players speculate that Bayle is also responsible for that injury as well.
