Disney Announces Transformation Coming to Parks Soon

Disneyland and Walt Disney World are making significant changes to their Genie+ ride reservation system, effective July 2024. The updated system, now called "Lightning Lane Multi Pass," will allow guests to book reservations before arriving at the parks.

The current Genie+, introduced in 2021 as a paid replacement for the complimentary FastPass system, has faced criticism for its same-day booking requirement. The new Lightning Lane Multi Pass addresses this concern by enabling advance reservations. Guests staying at Disney resorts can book up to seven days prior to arrival, while other guests can book up to three days ahead.

Key changes include:

  • Name Change: Genie+ becomes Lightning Lane Multi Pass; individual Lightning Lane selections become Lightning Lane Single Pass.
  • Advance Booking: Guests can now plan and purchase their Lightning Lane reservations before their park visit.
  • Increased Reservations: The number of reservable Lightning Lanes per day will increase.
  • Disneyland Differences: Disneyland will only see the name change; booking and redemption processes remain unchanged.
  • Virtual Queue Remains: The existing Virtual Queue system, used for high-demand attractions like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, will continue.

These modifications aim to improve guest experience by allowing for more efficient trip planning. The changes primarily impact Walt Disney World, although the updated system will include Tiana's Bayou Adventure, opening June 28th. The success of this overhaul will depend on its seamless implementation and guest reception. The ability to pre-book Lightning Lane passes may prove particularly beneficial during peak seasons and special events.
