Destiny 2's Year of Prophecy: Here's Everything Guardians Need to Know

Author:Kristen Update:May 21,2025

Get ready, Guardian—Bungie has just pulled back the curtain on the exciting future of its sci-fi shooter, Destiny 2, with a roadmap that includes two new expansions and major seasonal and core game updates. All of this falls under the banner of the "Year of Prophecy," a year set to deliver four significant content updates, split between two paid expansions and two free updates for all players.

Kicking things off is the "Rite of the Nine," a free update that offers a fresh take on dungeon diving. Available now, this update refreshes familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep. Expect unique twists and the chance to reconnect with Orin, along with new dungeon weapons to enhance your arsenal.

Come July 15, the first paid expansion, "Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate," will launch. This expansion introduces a multiyear saga involving the enigmatic Nine, powerful beings predating the Traveler. Players will meet new characters, Lodi and Ikora, as they explore the new destination, Kepler. Designed to inspire puzzle-solving and deep exploration, Kepler promises new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.

Simultaneously on July 15, core game innovations will be rolled out, including revamped armor and gear systems to enhance buildcrafting. A new activity selection screen called the Portal will streamline gameplay, allowing players to easily choose between Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the newly introduced Solo Ops. These activities cater to different play styles, from quick fireteam action to solo sessions. Additionally, 50 new modifiers will offer deeper customization and curated rotations to keep the content fresh.

Pre-order bonuses for the expansions include exclusive items. Here's what you can expect:

On September 9, the "Ash & Iron" major update will go live, followed by the second expansion, "Renegades," on December 2. The year will conclude with the "Shadow & Order" major update on March 3.

"Destiny 2: Renegades" draws inspiration from the Star Wars universe, merging Destiny's unique storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi themes and elements. This news comes as a welcome update for fans, especially following the layoffs of 220 staff members in July 2024, less than a year after another round of 100 layoffs at Bungie.

While Destiny 2 continues to evolve, Bungie is also working on the reboot of their classic franchise, Marathon. Revealed in May 2023, the first real look at Marathon came recently, with IGN's hands-on preview expressing confidence that it will satisfy the Bungie PvP itch when it launches on PC and consoles in September.
