Final Fantasy Tactics Tackles Division and Inequality

Author:Kristen Update:Nov 05,2025

Yasumi Matsuno, the visionary creator and director behind Final Fantasy Tactics, has shared the personal inspiration behind the game, explaining that he wrote its narrative to bring light to people living in an era that felt "stripped of hope."

With the long-anticipated Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles finally receiving a release date later this year, Matsuno published a heartfelt message on X/Twitter, stating he now "offers this story once more" — a sentiment that seems to resonate deeply with the social unease and division characterizing 2025.

"Nearly three decades ago, the burst of Japan's bubble economy left the nation's financial institutions buried under bad debt, leading to widespread corporate failures, a sharp spike in unemployment, and a period of overall societal stagnation," he reflected. "It was a time when hope felt elusive, and dreams were often valued only by their cost.

"Against this backdrop, I created a story," Matsuno continued. "It follows Ramza, a young man who courageously battles a rigid class system. It's also the tale of Delita, a character who exploits the surrounding chaos and despair to claw his way up the social ladder. It is a saga of intertwined fate, where friendship and betrayal are deeply connected.

"And now, in 2025 — as inequality and social divides continue to challenge us — I present this story again. The power to resist and change things lies with you."

The Final Fantasy Tactics remaster will feature two distinct editions: the timeless original (complete with the War of the Lions translation) and a fully reimagined version boasting complete voice acting, a redesigned user interface, substantial story expansions and refinements, and enhanced graphics. It launches for PS5 and PS5 on September 30, 2025.
