Confirmed: Robert Pattinson Will Not Be the DCU Batman

James Gunn and Peter Safran have confirmed that The Brave and the Bold will introduce a new Batman to the DC Universe (DCU), definitively ruling out Robert Pattinson's iteration. During a DC Studios presentation, Safran and Gunn clarified that Pattinson will remain exclusive to Matt Reeves' "The Batman Epic Crime Saga." Gunn stated unequivocally, "It's certainly not the plan. No," regarding Pattinson's inclusion in the broader DCU. Safran added, "And we love him, but we've got to introduce a Batman into the DCU. That's imperative. And so that's the plan with The Brave and the Bold."

Earlier speculation about Pattinson's potential crossover stemmed from Reeves himself leaving the possibility open earlier this year. However, Reeves emphasized his focus on "The Epic Crime Saga," stating, "What the future brings? I can’t really tell you. I have no idea right now except that my head is down now about getting The Batman Part 2 shooting and to make it something really, really special." Safran expressed enthusiasm for The Batman Part 2, noting that while a script hasn't been finalized, "what we've read so far is very encouraging."

The Brave and the Bold is currently in active development, with the story progressing well. While Andy Muschietti was initially attached to direct, Gunn and Safran are actively developing the script and will present it to Muschietti once it's ready to determine if he remains a fit for the project. Further announcements regarding The Brave and the Bold are promised soon.

The Batman Part 2's release date has been pushed back to October 1, 2027, resulting in a five-year gap between Pattinson's debut and the sequel. Regarding the implications for The Brave and the Bold's release, Safran only confirmed, "I think we've announced October 2027 there will be a Batman movie. That is all we can tell you right now."

Interestingly, a brief, intentionally vague glimpse of the DCU Batman was shown in Episode 6 of Creature Commandos. Gunn explained the decision to keep the image largely a silhouette, stating he wanted "more silhouette" than the initially rendered version. This cameo, however, confirms Batman's pre-existing presence and established recognition within the DCU, negating the need for an origin story. Gunn also hinted at a future team-up between this DCU Batman and Superman, expressing his excitement for showcasing the character alongside Superman. He emphasized, "This is the DCU Batman… He's the most popular superhero in the world and I can't wait for people to see more of him, along with Superman, and together.”
