Firaxis Games has announced a virtual reality (VR) adaptation of the recently released Civilization VII. Sid Meier's Civilization VII - VR marks the franchise's first venture into VR and will launch exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets in Spring 2025.

Developed by PlaySide Studios (known for The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners and Meta Horizon Worlds), Civilization VII - VR offers a unique gameplay experience.

Here's an official description:

Civilization VII - VR brings the world of Civilization to life in an unprecedented way. The game world unfolds on a Command Table, allowing players to zoom in for intricate detail or zoom out for a strategic overview. Players interact directly with world leaders, forging alliances or declaring war across the ages.

The game supports both immersive VR and mixed reality modes, seamlessly switching between them. VR places players in a museum overlooking a personalized vista; mixed reality adapts the Command Table to the player's physical space. A dedicated Archives room displays gameplay achievements as detailed dioramas in both VR and mixed reality. Online multiplayer supports up to four players on Meta Quest 3 and 3S.

The PC and console versions of Civilization VII, initially released with early access, have received mixed player feedback on Steam, citing UI issues, limited map variety, and missing features. Firaxis has acknowledged this criticism and promised improvements, including UI enhancements, cooperative multiplayer teams, and expanded map types.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, in an interview with IGN, addressed the negative reviews, expressing confidence that the core Civilization fanbase will appreciate the game with continued play and describing its early performance as "very encouraging."
