The VR version will be available exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets. Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer at Civ VII, expressed excitement about launching a new era of strategy gaming. Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, highlighted the momentum in mixed reality gaming, emphasizing Civ VII VR's appeal to dedicated strategy players. Note that, despite the game's release on PlayStation consoles, a PSVR2 version is not currently planned.

Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options

Civ VII VR offers a unique, board-game-like experience. Players will navigate a command table, allowing for detailed observation of units and buildings. The game supports immersive VR and MR modes, seamlessly switching between them. The VR environment places players in a museum overlooking a personalized vista, while the MR mode adapts the command table to the player's physical space.

Single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes are included, supporting up to four players with Meta Quest 3/3S headsets. Players can team up against AI opponents or compete directly against each other. The online multiplayer component requires both a 2K and a Meta account.

Addressing Player Feedback and Future Updates

Firaxis Games is actively addressing player feedback from the early access period (available since February 6th, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Edition owners). The team is prioritizing UI improvements, focusing on intuitiveness, map readability, and overall polish. Additional features requested by the community, such as team-based multiplayer and diverse map types, are also planned. A quality-of-life update in March will address UI issues, AI balance, diplomacy, crises, and bug fixes.

The standard Civ VII launches worldwide on February 11, 2025, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. While the VR version is slated for Spring 2025, a precise release date for Civ VII VR remains unannounced. For more details, visit our Civilization VII information page.
