Captain America: Brave New World Is the Start of Avengers 2.0

Author:Kristen Update:Feb 24,2025

Six years after the Avengers disbanded following Thanos' defeat and Tony Stark's death, the world once again needs its mightiest heroes. With new Avengers films slated for 2026 and 2027, the MCU is gearing up for a team reassembly, starting with Captain America: Brave New World.

Marvel Studios producer Nate Moore explains the strategic delay in reuniting the Avengers, emphasizing the need to allow audiences to miss the team. He highlights Captain America's central role in successful Avengers teams, noting the time investment in developing Sam Wilson into a capable leader after inheriting the shield in Avengers: Endgame. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showcased Wilson's journey, and Brave New World finds him embracing his role as Captain America. However, a new challenge awaits: leading a new Avengers team.

A marketing clip reveals President Ross (Harrison Ford), succeeding the late William Hurt, tasks Wilson with restarting the Avengers initiative. This is surprising, considering Ross's role in establishing the Sokovia Accords, which fractured the Avengers. Director Julius Onah explains Ross's evolution into a statesman seeking amends for past mistakes, recognizing the Avengers' potential benefit to the world. Ross, a general, understands the tactical advantage a superhero team provides.

This new Avengers team will differ significantly. Captain America is now an official US government role, placing the team under the US Department of Defence. Moore suggests Ross's motivation stems from a desire to control this power, preventing others from exploiting it.

Ross's interest is likely fueled by the discovery of a world-altering substance: Adamantium, unearthed from the petrified Celestial in Eternals. This discovery threatens to ignite a global arms race, making a superhero team a strategic asset. Moore emphasizes the significant advantage a nation possessing the Avengers would hold.

The collaboration between Ross and Wilson is unlikely to be seamless, given Ross's role in Wilson's imprisonment due to the Sokovia Accords. Onah highlights the palpable tension between them.

The possibility of John Walker leading a government-backed Avengers team in Thunderbolts is raised, leaving Wilson to potentially assemble his own independent team. This sets the stage for Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.

Brave New World marks Wilson's journey towards Avengers leadership. Onah emphasizes Wilson's empathy as his superpower, contrasting with his physical capabilities. Moore highlights Wilson's growth in accepting his role and the audience's acceptance of him as Captain America.

With only two films between Brave New World and Avengers: Doomsday, Wilson's recruitment efforts will likely feature in Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four: First Steps. The assembly of Avengers 2.0 is underway.
