Author:Kristen Update:Jan 07,2026

Samsung's top-performing PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD is discounted today with this early Amazon Prime Day offer. You can currently purchase the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe solid-state drive (SSD) for only $149.99 on Amazon with free shipping. Amazon Prime cardholders also receive an extra 10% cashback on their order instead of the standard 5%. The Samsung 990 Pro is widely regarded as one of the finest PCIe 4.0 SSDs available. It serves as an excellent storage upgrade for your PlayStation 5 (once a heatsink is added) or as a primary boot drive for your gaming PC.

The 990 Pro is the successor to the acclaimed 980 Pro, delivering a significant speed upgrade. Samsung states it offers 50% better performance per watt than its predecessor. It delivers blazing sequential read/write speeds of up to 7,450MB/s and 6,900MB/s, respectively, with random speeds reaching 1400K/1550K IOPS. Unlike many competitors, its components are manufactured in-house. The drive uses the new Samsung Pascal controller and 7th-generation TLC NAND flash memory. The Samsung 990 Pro includes a dedicated DRAM cache, whereas many other SSDs at this price (including Samsung's own 990 Evo Plus) are DRAM-less and use Host Memory Buffer (HMB) to cut costs.

Is the Samsung 990 Pro Compatible with the PS5?

The Samsung 990 Pro is a superb SSD choice for the PS5. In terms of pure performance, it surpasses what the console requires; the PS5's internal SSD will be the bottleneck. Sony recommends a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 SSD with a rated sequential read speed of 5,500MB/s to match the internal drive, and the 990 Pro is significantly faster. However, at this sale price, it's more affordable than many slower alternatives, making it a great value. Sony advises using an SSD with an attached heatsink. Fortunately, this model of the 990 Pro includes a robust, all-metal heatsink that is also slim enough to fit perfectly within the PS5's expansion slot.

Amazon has also reduced the price of the 2TB SK Hynix P41 Platinum PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe SSD to just $129.99. This is $20 less than the Samsung 990 Pro, includes a DRAM cache, and offers virtually identical real-world performance. While SK Hynix may not be as well-known to consumers as Samsung or Western Digital, it is a major force in the flash memory market. SK Hynix is a leading South Korean DRAM manufacturer and one of the world's largest memory chipmakers and semiconductor companies, supplying components for reputable brands like Corsair and G.Skill.
