My First Adult LEGO Purchase Was This Mario Set and I Have No Regrets

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 20,2025

I'm generally practical with my money, sticking to essentials and the occasional sale-priced video game. It wasn't until last year that I even considered buying something as non-essential as a LEGO set, despite enjoying them as a child. The price tag is a big factor; while some sets are affordable, licensed ones, especially those based on movies or video games, are often expensive. That's why the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant took so long to make it into my shopping cart. It's been on sale for under $50 since last October, but only recently did I decide my desk needed a new, rather unusual, potted plant.

My interest was piqued by IGN's build review. A lifelong Mario fan, this set seemed the perfect way to showcase my love for the franchise. LEGO offers many botanical sets, but none are as delightfully terrifying as this little guy.

I'm thrilled with the finished product. It sits on my desk, and I often imagine myself in the Mushroom Kingdom, tending to my Piranha Plant during work. The build itself was enjoyable; challenging enough to keep me engaged, yet completed in a single afternoon. This is my first Nintendo LEGO set, but definitely not my last.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on a LEGO Set You Love?

LEGO sets, particularly those aimed at adults, can be pricey, with some exceeding $200. It's easy to overspend on something awesome, but there's a balance between treating yourself and breaking the bank. The sub-$50 price of this Mario set made it a worthwhile purchase. The hours spent building it, and the daily happiness it brings, make it a valuable addition to my desk. Was that happiness worth over $50? For me, yes.
