2XKO: Tag-Team Fighting Evolution Coming Soon

Author:Kristen Update:Dec 16,2024

Riot Games' 2XKO (formerly Project L) is poised to revolutionize the tag-team fighting game genre. This article delves into its innovative tag-team mechanics and the recently unveiled playable demo.

Reimagining 2v2 Combat

2XKO, showcased at EVO 2024, introduces "Duo Play," a unique twist on the traditional 2v2 format. Instead of one player controlling both characters, two players team up, each controlling a champion. This results in thrilling four-player matches (2v2) or even 2v1 showdowns. Each team features a "Point" character and an "Assist" character.

The tag system itself is multifaceted, incorporating:

  • Assist Actions: The Point character summons the Assist for special moves.
  • Handshake Tag: The Point and Assist instantly swap roles.
  • Dynamic Save: The Assist intervenes to break up enemy combos.

Matches are longer and more strategic than in other tag fighters. Both players on a team must be defeated to win a round, but even defeated champions can still act as assists.

Beyond character selection, 2XKO introduces "Fuses," which modify team playstyles. The demo showcased five Fuses:

  • PULSE: Rapid attacks unleash devastating combos.
  • FURY: Below 40% health, increased damage and special dash cancel.
  • FREESTYLE: Allows two Handshake Tags in quick succession.
  • DOUBLE DOWN: Combine ultimate moves with your partner.
  • 2X ASSIST: Enables multiple assist actions for your partner.

Game designer Daniel Maniago highlighted the Fuse system’s role in enhancing player expression and enabling powerful coordinated attacks.

The demo featured six League of Legends champions: Braum, Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Yasuo, and Illaoi, each with unique moves reflecting their in-game abilities. While popular characters like Jinx and Katarina were absent from the Alpha Lab Playtest, their inclusion in the future is confirmed.

Alpha Lab Playtest

2XKO, a free-to-play title for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 (launching in 2025), is currently accepting registrations for its Alpha Lab Playtest (August 8-19). Further details on the playtest and registration can be found via the link provided in the original article.
