The 10 Best Game Boy Advance & Nintendo DS Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special

Author:Kristen Update:Feb 02,2025

A curated selection of retro Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. While the Switch Online app boasts a robust GBA library, this list focuses on titles independently released on the eShop. Ten standout games are featured – four GBA and six DS – presented without ranking.

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Part of Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off is the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge, this GBA version offers a compelling alternative, providing a worthwhile comparison and a more streamlined experience. A fun title even for non-shooter enthusiasts.

Mega Man Zero – Included in Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on GBA. This side-scrolling action game, while initially somewhat rough around the edges, initiates an excellent series. A great starting point, with further installments readily available.

Mega Man Battle Network – Included in Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A second Mega Man entry, justified by its distinct gameplay from Mega Man Zero. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy, set within a cleverly conceived virtual world. While later installments show diminishing returns, this remains a highly enjoyable experience.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Included in Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

Part of the Castlevania Advance Collection, Aria of Sorrow stands out as a personal favorite, arguably surpassing even Symphony of the Night for some. Its soul-collecting system encourages gameplay, and the engaging mechanics make the grinding enjoyable. A top-tier third-party GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

Originally a cult classic with limited distribution, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge found wider success on DSiWare. This title solidified Shantae's popularity, leading to continued appearances across consoles. Interestingly, its GBA predecessor is slated for release soon.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Included in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA title due to its origins, Ace Attorney is a well-known series blending investigations and courtroom drama. The original game is exceptionally strong, though later entries also hold merit.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick offers a unique gameplay mechanic. As a ghost, players utilize their abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery of their own death. A captivating and highly recommended title.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier Nintendo DS game, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without access to a DS. A truly exceptional game.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Included in Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

Part of the Castlevania Dominus Collection, Dawn of Sorrow benefits from improved button controls over its original touch controls. However, all three DS Castlevania games within the collection are recommended.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Included in Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

While the Etrian Odyssey series thrives on the DS/3DS platforms, this Switch port offers a playable experience. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a substantial RPG worth exploring.
