Dive into the thrilling world of Spite & Malice, a competitive patience game designed for two players that's sure to test your strategic prowess. At the outset, each player is equipped with a hand of 5 cards, a pay-off pile of 20 cards, and 4 empty side stacks. In the center of the table, you'll find 3 empty center stacks and a stock pile filled with the remaining cards, setting the stage for an intense battle of wits.
Your mission? Be the first to empty your pay-off pile and claim victory. The center stacks are where the action happens, built upwards from an ace, regardless of suit. Imagine starting with the ace of diamonds, followed by the two of spades, then the three of hearts, and so on. Kings, however, are the wild cards of this game. Play a king on any center stack, and it transforms into the next card needed—lay a king of spades on a ten of clubs, and it morphs into a queen. Complete a center stack by playing a queen or king on a jack, and it gets shuffled back into the stock pile, keeping the game dynamic.
Your side stacks offer flexibility, allowing you to place any card, though only the top card is in play. At the beginning of your turn, you draw from the stock pile to ensure your hand remains at 5 cards, ready for action. Your turn consists of several possible moves:
- Play the top card from your pay-off pile onto one of the center stacks.
- Transfer the top card from one of your side stacks to a center stack.
- Place a card from your hand onto a center stack.
- Drop a card from your hand onto one of your side stacks, signaling the end of your turn.
The game reaches its climax when a player successfully plays their last card from the pay-off pile onto a center stack, winning the round and scoring points equivalent to the number of cards left in their opponent's pay-off pile. Should the stock pile run dry before a winner emerges, the game ends in a stalemate, with no points awarded. The ultimate champion is the first player to reach a total of 50 points, making every move count in this engaging duel of strategy and anticipation.
